India, the land of more than a billion people, has a rich history of imparting knowledge to the masses worldwide. Its ancient universities had attracted students from all over the world. In present times, with more than a thousand universities and above 42,000 colleges, India has an elaborate higher education system. 

One of the major metropolitan cities located in West Bengal is Kolkata. The erstwhile capital of the Indian British Empire, Kolkata, is renowned for its rich cultural legacy, top educational institutions, academic environment and fast-growing economy.

What Makes Kolkata Good for Higher Education?

Kolkata, previously Calcutta, is a major education centre of the country. The public-funded universities, world-class education, research programs, ample work opportunities and vibrant Bengali culture make Kolkata a preferred study destination.

It has several top-ranking universities in the country. The most prominent among them include the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta (IIM-C), Jadavpur University (JU), Presidency University, etc. IIM-C is the best-ranked institute for management courses as per the NIRF. 

Presidency College- established in 1817, is one of the oldest institutes of higher learning. Students can choose from a wide spectrum of subject programs offered here. Its alumni include prominent Indian personalities, including Amartya Sen, Satyajit Ray, Amit Mitra, etc. 

Eligibility Criteria

The admission process in Kolkata varies from university to university. Therefore, after selecting the course and university of their choice, students must apply directly to the institute. Universities regularly conduct entrance examinations to screen the applicants. 

For instance, admission to the IIM-C is subject to the scores in Common Admission Test (CAT). The general requirement for admission to a graduate program is a 10+2 school passing certificate. For the Master’s program, a bachelor’s degree is needed. Similarly, a master’s degree in a relevant subject is essential for doctoral programmes. International students can also take advantage of several scholarships provided by the state and union government.
